The son of an immigrant coal miner, Al “Lube” Lubamersky played center and linebacker on his Pennsylvania high school’s football team. After he served in World War II, he was recruited to play for the University of San Francisco where he earned Bachelors’ and Masters’ degrees and an Administrators’ credential. He was a shop teacher, football coach, and Assistant Principal at GWHS from 1953 to 1981, and coached GWHS Varsity Football to its first championship in 1960.
Following his sudden passing in 1983, fellow football coach Jim Ruane initiated and fundraised for the Lubamersky Scholarship in honor of his brother-in law. Initially, one Varsity Football player "who has best exhibited unselfish and aggressive participation in the game of football" was selected annually by the Varsity coach.
In the new millennium, award criteria was refreshed in collaboration with Coach Ruane and the Lubamersky family to be given to an outstanding player of any gender whose athletic excellence has inspired greater achievements and cohesiveness among his/her teammates in CIF/AAA-sanctioned team sports. Students submit applications which, along with their transcripts and optional coach recommendation letters, are reviewed by the Lubamersky family who select one, two or three seniors each year.
Your donation to the Lubamersky Fund will enable the award amount to grow each year to assist outstanding college-bound scholar-athletes.
Your help in identifying the unknown awardees is greatly appreciated.
